36 Quai des Orfèvres (France, 2004)

Cracking ‘flic’ (cop) movie featuring Auteuil and Depardieu and a narrative that keeps setting situations up, resolving them and charging on to the next complication. Visually impressive, excellent performances; a top cop thriller (Cubby Broccoli, arthouse cinema). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390808/

  1. I thought this was a great polar. What baffles me is why popular films like this take so long to get to us. It came out in France in 2004 and racked up 1.6 million admissions (check out http://lumiere.obs.coe.int/web/film_info/?id=22161) Despite this it wasn’t released in either the UK or Germany in 2004 or 2005. I wonder if it only got here because of the success of Jacques Audiard’s De battre mon coeur s’est arrêté. Time you saw that, Nick. It shares some of the milieu as 36, but it’s even better.
